12 Metres Shine at the 2025 NYYC Tiedemann Regatta

The 2025 Robert H. Tiedemann Classics Regatta, hosted by the New York Yacht Club in Newport, brought together a stunning fleet of classic yachts, with the 12 Metres stealing much of the spotlight. Over two days of racing on Narragansett Bay, legendary Twelves including Intrepid, Courageous, American Eagle, and Onowa demonstrated why these designs remain some of the most admired in sailing.

Saturday’s races featured steady southwest breezes that rewarded precise boat handling and tactical starts. Intrepid, the two-time America’s Cup winner, showed exceptional consistency, posting strong finishes that kept her near the top of the 12 Metre standings. American Eagle and Courageous each had moments of brilliance, while Onowa impressed with smooth crew work and sharp upwind speed.

Sunday delivered trickier conditions, with light air and convergence zones creating big gains and losses across the fleet. In one pivotal race, Intrepid recovered from a deep position to edge out Gesture by just seconds—a move that proved decisive in securing her overall placing.

Beyond the racing, the regatta celebrated the enduring legacy of the 12 Metre class, drawing spectators who lined the harbor to admire these beautifully maintained icons. The event set the tone for the rest of the summer season, as the 12 Metres will next square off in the Edgartown 30th Anniversary 12 Metre Regatta, followed by the Nantucket Regatta and Opera House Cup the following week.
